Meet Our Language Instructors

Clara Gonzalez has been teaching Spanish for over 20 years, including 10 years for Rec & Ed. She was born in Bogata, Columbia, Sra. and received her BA in Sociology and Spanish from Eastern Michigan University.

Clara enjoys teaching Spanish because she feels that learning a foreign language is like opening a door to another culture. She draws on her own experience in learning a second language to help her students feel comfortable acquiring new skills.

Back in the Spring
Heidi Benson lived in Rome, Italy, for five years. She developed an Italian program for the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome, where she taught for four years. At the same time, she worked as Administrative Assistant / Interpreter for a private Italian engineering firm. After returning to the States, Heidi taught Italian at Purdue University, and then at the University of Michigan. Currently, in addition to teaching Italian for Community Education & Recreation, she is a full-time volunteer at her children's schools.

Alice Chang is a native of Taiwan and came to the US in 1987. She holds a Masters degree from Purdue University. She has been teaching Chinese language classes for Rec & Ed since 2004.

Kiyoe Ise came to this country as a visiting student over 40 years ago. She has taught Japanese language classes for Rec & Ed for 15 years.

Stephanie Wichmann teaches ESL classes. She holds a Master's Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and currently teaches English as a second language to adults in the community education, and college settings. She also teaches English Composition at a local college.

Stephanie has a B.A. in French and is currently finishing her Masters in French Language.
