Green Adventures Camp 2011

Maurella's Class

Week 6: BATS, BUTTERFLIES, AND HUMMINGBIRDS!

Monday:

Every camper was able to make thier own hummingbird feeder to hang in thier yard! Mix warm water and sugar and find a place near a window to hang your feeder, wait and watch for hummingbirds native to Michigan!!!

We also began to learn about how bats use echolocation and played a fun ecolocation game.

Tuesday:

Ecolocation was our focus today! We explored how bats use sound to locate thier food through different centers. Our centers focused on how sound comes from sound waves, vibrations, and the use of echolocation.

We also watched a hummingbird movie and learned about thier adaptations, habitats, and mating rituals.

Wednesday:

Today our class pretended to be mother or father bats searching for our baby bats in a cave. We learned that the way we find our babies is through scent. Using just our sense of smell we had to find our bats (vanilla, lemon, mint, or banana scented!) When you pick up your camper ask them to show you the bat cave :)

The whole camp was able to work together in a great team building activity! We created a bat fruit salad. All members of camp had a special role as we worked together on our assembley line to create a fruit salad snack!

Thursday:

This morning our class studied the different beaks that hummingbirds have that allows them to feed on different flowers. Then each student helped to create different flowers and beaks to practice being a hummingbird! We all tried to feed (drink apple juice) from the different flowers in the fields!

WEEK 7: WILD WATERWAYS

Monday:

Today we learned all aboutt frogs! Our class studied the lofe cycle of the frog and created a life cycle map to show the different stages that a frog goes through. We also learned some silly frog jokes and created a frog flip book to take home!
