The Ann Arbor Public Schools Community Education and Recreation Department is committed to enhancing the overall well-being of children who attend our School Age Child Care Program. Our program is designed to both enrich and complement the child’s school experience. To that end, we strive to provide:
|

|
- A safe, healthy, dependable environment.
- A capable, sensitive, caring and energetic staff who understand children’s needs in this environment and who take part in ongoing staff development.
- Well organized, age appropriate activities, games, and material in good condition for recreation and skill acquisition.
- Realistic situations for (1) informal learning of new skills, (2) assuming some responsibilities for the child care environment, and (3) dialogue, practice, and mastery of ways for getting along with other children and adults.
- Recognition of children’s prior knowledge of the ways the community works, and fostering interest in continued investigation and enjoyment of the surrounding community (e.g. simple interpretations of rules which govern a community).
- An extension of opportunities already provided by the school community for children of varying ages, different cultures and ethnic groups to live and learn together, and to increase parent’s understanding of our program‘s commitment to principles of the school community.
Regarding human sexuality issues:
- We believe sexuality is a positive and fundamental part of human existence and affects all aspects of our lives.
- We believe children are naturally curious about their bodies, and we know that, through day to day interactions, questions and behaviors will arise.
- We believe parents are their children’s most important teachers.
- We believe child care/summer camp staff can be a positive influence in supporting parents in this process.
- In responding to children’s questions and behaviors, staff will follow the guidelines established in their staff handbook. These guidelines are available to any parent upon request.
