library.jpgThe Library Media Center Program

All of Ann Arbor's public schools have a library media specialist on staff who has studied in the special area of media and technology.  The Preschool has one part-time library media specialist, assisted by a media clerk who comes one-half day every two weeks.

During the 2006-2007 school year, two parents volunteered their time to check books into the library and to shelve books.  Ask the Media Specialist how you can help in the library media center.

Things you may want to know
about the  program:

How often does my child go to the library media center?
Your child has a regularly scheduled 25-minute library class every week.

What does my child do in the library media center?
At library time, children may do finger plays and hand rhymes, sing songs, practice a Mother Goose nursery rhyme, hear a story, use the computer lab, and check out a book to bring home.  It's a busy time!

Why is this important?
Singing, rhyming, and reading aloud with children are important.
Songs and rhymes are good to read or sing aloud because they contain the basic rhythms of language.  Children's reading experts agree that reading stories aloud offers the easiest and most effective way to turn your children into lifelong readers.  A child who loves books will want to learn to read them.  And reading is the key to becoming a lifelong learner.

How many books can my child check out from the Library Media Center?
Your child may check out one book each week if the previous week's book is returned on time.  Reminder notes go home with children who forget their books.  Children are encouraged to be responsible for their library book, and we talk about ways to keep track of a book at home and how to take good care of a library book.

What happens if my child's library book gets lost or damaged?
If your child's book is lost, or if it is damaged and cannot be repaired, you will be expected to pay for the book.  It is expected that the book will be paid for before your child can choose another book to read at home.

How often will my child get to use a computer?
The Preschool is fortunate to have 14 computers as learning tools for enrolled children.    Students use a computer at least two times each month.

What does my child do if he does not use a computer?
Children who are not assigned to a computer get to practice that difficult life lesson about taking turns!  These children have several options -- they may read on the story steps, use Childwood Magnets to retell  Mother Goose rhymes or stories,  play a game, or work a puzzle.  All children have time to choose and check out a library book.

What will my preschooler learn by using the computer?
We live in a rapidly changing, technological world.  It is important that children become comfortable with technology and computers early in life.  The software we have teaches beginning reading and writing skills, concepts such as counting and number relationships,  problem solving, and creative expression.  Our children come to Preschool with a wide range of computer experiences, and are encouraged to learn at their own pace and comfort level.  All the preschoolers are exposed to some computer terminology.  For example, many can point to and name the mouse, the keyboard, and the computer monitor.

When using the computer, they focus on learning how to use the mouse or improve their mouse skills.  Young children have to isolate the clicker on the mouse; practice using one hand on the mouse; and understand the relationship between the mouse and what happens on the monitor.  Some children will gain confidence and skill in navigating the software programs.  By working with children in these ways, we are encouraging their growth and development and helping to prepare them for a future in which they will need to know how to use technology.
