Introductory Visit with your Parent Educator

All families have a parent educator as an additional resource when they join First Steps.

What is a parent educator?

Parent educators are trained and certified by Parents as Teachers in the Born to Learn curriculum and they all have experience working with young children and their parents.  Their focus is on development and how to share this information with you.

Why should you have an introductory visit?

There is always more to learn about your child's development and meeting with your parent educator is the first step.  If you ever have questions about how your child is doing developmentally or what do to about temper tantrums or fussy eaters, you have a person to contact.

What happens during an introductory visit?

  • You bring your child to the Family Center at 2775 Boardwalk Dr at a scheduled time during the 3rd or 4th week of your first class session with us.
  • Your parent educator brings the appropriate Ages & Stages Questionnaire to do together.  This helps us learn more about your family and gives you a good developmental snap-shot.  It is not an evaluation.  We use it as a tool so you can clearly see what developmental skills your child is working on and what is coming along soon.  We hope we find plenty of "not yets" as well as "yeses" and "sometimes."
  • We also answer any questions you might have about community resources, our program or how to find a preschool.  We're here to help with anything!

Did you miss signing-up for an Intro and you're interested now?

It's never too late.  Please call 994-2300 x53186 and ask Sherri how you can meet with a parent educator.  You may always ask your teacher as well.
